He means processing 3,000 words a minute by the time he got to college at the State University of New York, Binghamton.Ĭoincidentally, Berg gained an interest in college in the brain and how it works. I was surrounded by a lot of high-level books so I was reading at a pretty high level early.”īy high level, he means analyzing the relativity theory at age 9. “I read at a college level in the sixth grade because I basically hung out in the library. The average person reads 200 words a minute.īerg’s learning ability is also anything but average, and has been since his early days in New York. He is listed in the 1990 Guinness Book of World Records for reading more than 25,000 words a minute. The McKinney resident is the world’s fastest reader. Gangs of bookworms, however, might feel intimidated by Berg’s uncanny ability to peruse a book. “To this day, I don’t think anyone’s ever felt threatened by gangs in a library.” “I found the safest place in the neighborhood was the library,” he said. Not much else could growing up in the Brooklyn projects. So if we would rather see a student reading at 400 wpm with 60 - 70% comprehension than at 100% comprehension at 100 wpm to ensure they can complete the tests and thus likely get a higher score.Bookshelves and desk lamps brought serenity to Howard Berg. The SAT requires a reading rate of roughly 250 wpm to complete and the ACT requires between 300-400. The main reason we (at Sylvan) really encourage the program is for the U.S. One of my adult participants commented that chunking literature was comparable to sprinting through a museum. It also tends to make reading less enjoyable on its own.

One of the lessons explicitly states not to chunk, or use very slow chunking, when 100% comprehension is necessary - assuming there's enough time. Although we tutors typically expect a participant's words per minute to be about 4 times faster at the end of the program than when they started, we also expect about 60-70% comprehension when reading at this speed. If you became really proficient, you might even be able to read the whole sentence in one "chunk." The theory being that you could then move your eyes over the page at the same pace, but the amount of words you can read would be drastically increased.Īlso as mentioned, the main drawback is a loss in comprehension. With the sentence "Reddit really loves cats," chunking would have you would move your eyes twice: (Reddit really) and (loves cats) instead of moving your eyes 4 times. learning to read groups of words instead of reading one word at a time. I'm an employee at Sylvan Tutoring Center, and we have a speed reading program, known as Advanced Reading Skills (or ARS.) Although it focuses on skipping certain implicit words (like articles and pronouns,) and speeding or quieting your inner voice as mentioned already in the thread, the primary focus of ARS is a technique it calls "chunking," i.e. Guinness World Records holder for fastest reader (25000WPM!) I can guarantee you this guy does not read with a voice in his head. The reason why they don't correct it later in your education is beyond me, my assumption is that it is simply not a necessary skill, it just makes you more proficient at reading.

Learning is a process, they teach you the "wrong" way to read so that you can understand how words work.

The reason why they don't teach this to you right at the start is because it would be like trying to learn how to become a master of something before even understanding the basics, for example attempting to teach a 3rd grader trigonometry and algebra before they even understand basic mathematics.

I have been practicing getting rid of the voice in my head, and it helps a tonne! You have to learn to look at words as blocks of information, like you would a picture, and have your brain process several words/a whole line/several lines at a time (obviously depends on your aptitude and experience). Hi, I actually heard that getting rid of the voice in your head completely is the best method to becoming a real speed reader, not just making the voice "faster".
